A Visit to Blue Star Donuts in Portland

Part of our ten year wedding anniversary celebration was taking an overnight trip to Portland, OR. At just a little under three hours south of Seattle, its a fun and easy destination. There's no sales tax and there are plenty of unique neighborhoods to discover and explore. Another reason we like Portland? Its been labeled a foodie destination and every time we visit there are more and more incredible places to eat at.

One spot we wanted to check out was Blue Star Donuts. This gourmet donut concept was founded in Portland and now they have shops in Los Angeles and Tokyo. Their donuts are made from a classic brioche recipe, and I could really taste the quality and the care that went into making them. Their flavors stood out to me and I couldn't wait to try some donuts. I walked into the shop with a big smile on my face, ready to get my donut tasting on. And luckily for us, there was no line at the moment and they still had six flavors to choose from. They do sell out fast so the earlier you arrive, the better. After we walked around the block when we were finished, to explore the city, they were packed and they had a line. 

The four of us shared three donuts. We ordered the Chocolate Almond Ganache, the Maple Bacon, and the Blueberry Bourbon Basil. The Bourbon was cooked out of the donut so my sons were able to try it. They were excited by the vibrant color of the donut but the taste might have been a little sophisticated for them. Their tagline at Blue Star is Donuts for Grownups, so I wasn't too surprised. I enjoyed trying all of them. The chocolate donut was incredible rich with the Ganache being so dark and rich. The Maple Bacon one was surprising light because of the Brioche dough and was lightly glazed. The bacon wasn't too heavy and gave us that savory aspect we love in a donut. The Blueberry Bourbon Basil donut was enjoyable because of the unique taste and how it tasted like a cocktail.

I'm so glad we finally got to try Blue Star Donuts. It was worth waiting a couple of years to try!
