Happy Hour at Dragonfish Asian Cafe

Another happy hour worth checking out in downtown Seattle is Dragonfish Asian Café.  You'll be happy for sure with the prices, most of the drinks and dishes range from three to six bucks.  Most notable is how good everything actually tasted for the price.   I had a Lychee Drop Martini for only $3.95 that was delicious and strong and who doesn't love a vodka soaked lychee in her drink?  Their menu is Pan Asian so my husband and I ordered two rounds of sushi each because they only come four pieces to a plate.  He had the Spicy Tuna Roll and I had the Spicy Dungeness Crab Roll.  Then we shared the Vegetable Spring Rolls.  He also had the Skirt Steak which was very tender and perfectly cooked and I had the crab cakes.  I hadn't had crab cakes in a while and this was the first time I've only paid $5.95 for them.  My husband was still hungry so he got the chicken satay.  Then it was time for a little Lemongrass Crème Brule.  The serving was tiny but for four dollars it was the perfect thing.  The Crème Brule was light but creamy with the hard, glass-like topping you break with your spoon.  We sat in the bar and had pretty attentive service with the bartender right there.   Happy Hour is served in the bar only but everyday of the week from three to six pm.  My husband and I enjoyed another enjoyable date night.  A little adult time is never a bad idea, especially when sushi and martinis are involved.

A Family Portrait Session at Kubota Garden

We are 12's! Well, most of them.  When their grandma from Michigan showed up sporting a Wisconsin Packers shirt, it was them against her and they weren't shy in letting her know who's the best.  It's Seahawks all the way, baby! And don't ever forget it, Grandma!

I was asked to do a family portrait session for eight at a Seattle park.  I chose Kubota Garden near Renton because of the natural setting and many different backgrounds to choose from.  The summer afternoon was a beautiful one.  We can always count on Seattle summer's to be glorious.   To celebrate the Seahawks' 12th Man, here are 12 photos from the family's session!

Frost at Bellevue's Lincoln Center

I felt like I was dreaming when I spotted a Frost dessert shop in Bellevue.  I knew about the original Frost in Mill Creek and didn't know they'd expanded to Everett and now Bellevue.  Frost used to serve just donuts but now they have added cupcakes, macarons, and even wine.  Oh my!  What a combination of guilty pleasures.  The desserts at Frost are probably the most gourmet I've seen in the US.  They looked so pretty that people were taking pictures on their phones and just walking away.  At least buy something because how could you resist?  I selected two donuts for the four of us to share.  I chose the Salted Caramel Old Fashioned and the Toasted Coconut and Caramel Donut.  They were both top notch and of high quality in looks and taste.  The only problem was that I didn't buy enough!

Dinner at Din Tai Fung in Bellevue

Ah, the hype behind Din Tai Fung is crazy.  The wait times are crazy and the prices are high.  But one would never know because the prices are located on another sheet from the menu.  I'm sorry but twelve bucks is too much for a medium plate of fried rice with chicken.  Yes, the cocktails were tasty and unique, the food came out fast and the dumplings were good.  But...its an overpriced dumpling and noodle house in Bellevue.  People are known to wait for two hours for a table.  Save your money and head to Chinatown and get the same food for way less.  Or better yet, save your money for a plane ticket to Taiwan and eat it there. 

My drink was a Pineapple Cake cocktail with Belvedere Vodka that tasted like Pineapple Upside Down Cake.  It was sweet and went down easily, even if a little on the small side.  My husband enjoyed his Braised Beef Noodle Soup and found the beef to be super tender and flavorful.  We all shared the spendy fried rice and then we shared the chicken steamed dumplings and the shrimp and pork steamed dumplings.  The dumplings were juicy and the chicken ones were nice because of the touch of ginger.  I expected the shrimp and pork ones to be more flavorful.  The steamed dumplings were $10.25 for ten.  The prices added up quickly and I got a sticker shock when the bill was presented.  If only the prices were more visible I wouldn't have been so surprised by the bill at the end of the meal.

Dinner at Wing Wah Bistro

Do you ever just stumble upon a restaurant and decide to give it a try? That's what happened to my family and I recently when we headed to Seattle's International District for some dinner.  We knew we wanted Asian food but had no idea where to eat.  I was searching Yelp as my husband drove but my smart phone, sometimes not so smart, was running slow.  My better half wanted Pho and I was craving pot stickers so we just randomly picked a restaurant and parked.  Wing Wah Bistro had its own parking lot right in front so I think that's what caught our eye.  It didn't look like much from the outside but they advertised as serving Chinese food and Vietnamese, so score for us.   

The food turned out to be a pleasant surprise.  Not only was it presented well on square plates and make our mouths water when the server set it down, but it tasted delicious.  My husband got his Beef Pho and the boys and I shared some pot stickers, rice, Orange Chicken, and Honey Walnut Shrimp.  The Orange Chicken came with broccoli which was crunchy and well seasoned.  The chicken was hot and well sauced and carried a zing of heat. 

Now let me tell you about Honey Walnut Shrimp.  It's simple-lightly battered shrimp with a mayonnaise and honey sauce, and topped with walnuts that are sweet and the perfect combo to the creamy sauce.  One of my favorite foods and we even served them at our wedding.  I make Honey Walnut Shrimp at home and I could never grow tired of eating it.  They did a good job at Wing Wah Bistro and I even enjoyed my leftovers the next day.  I find its a pretty standard dish at Chinese restaurants and when I see it on the menu I order it.  They even have it at Panda Express now.  Try some, if you never have. 

Then to cleanse our palettes the server brought us each a bowl of almond pudding.  Just a few bites was the perfect way to end our meal.  So there you go.  Sometimes its fun to not know where you're going.  Because even something as simple as a dinner out can be a nice surprise.
